To carry out this initiative, a supra-regional multidisciplinary operational group (Galicia, Castilla y León, and Extremadura) has been created, comprising a total of 8 participants, including both applicant members and collaborating members.

Innovation agent and knowledge transfer office between the research sector and the business world in various sectors, such as agri-food and forestry, through the promotion and management of projects, as well as participation in leading communication, dissemination, and exploitation activities. It participates in the following projects: H2020 SoildiverAgro and ROADMAP, Interreg POCTEP Biomasa-AP and Conserval, Interreg Sudoe VINIoT; the regional operational groups BIO_MARTERRA, MULTI-Forest, PURINPRECISO, and SUEROVAL; and the supra-autonomous groups CLIMALACT, MAXI-CoberLEG, OLIVEBIOME, OLIVITECH, PLANFORLAB, PRERIVID, SIMBAV, and UBAVIDA.

Greenalia Biomass Power Curtis Teixeiro is the Greenalia group company dedicated to electricity generation from forest biomass at its power plant located in Curtis (A Coruña). Its production capacity is 150MWt, generating 50MWe. The power plant began operations in 2020 and is supplied with over half a million tonnes of forest waste generated from timber operations in Galicia.

Greenalia Biomass Power Curtis Teixeiro holds the SURE certification, which guarantees the sustainability of the biomass used in its processes, and it is also ISO 14001 certified by AENOR for environmental management. In addition, the Greenalia group maintains intense forestry activity through various subsidiaries focused on both the commercialization of roundwood and the supply of residual biomass to the Curtis generation plant. In the field of electricity generation from biomass, it is fully integrated, from the forest to the sale of the generated energy.

ARESA is a company based in Lugo, founded over 50 years ago, specializing in the manufacture, sale, and professional advice on fertilization solutions for agricultural professionals. ARESA provides the necessary inputs to agricultural distributors in Galicia, Castilla y León, Asturias, and northern Portugal, mainly limestone amendments, mineral fertilizers, and organo-mineral fertilizers.

ARESA is committed to continuous improvement in the field, with innovation as the only way to create value in rural areas and with the people who have made this their livelihood. The company is also a member of the Galician Cluster for Environmental Solutions and Circular Economy, VIRATEC.

Agrobarcenilla is a company that operates in the field of agricultural consulting and the distribution of plant protection products in the province of Palencia. With over 40 years of experience in agricultural consulting, including fertilizers within its area of expertise, the company has developed a strong reputation.

In recent years, Agrobarcenilla has committed to more sustainable fertilization practices that promote soil microbiomes and help achieve suppressive soils. This approach has allowed the company to position itself as a reference in areas such as biofertilization.

The Sociedad Cooperativa Galega A Carqueixa is a cooperative formed by 215 farming families located in San Román de Cervantes, Os Ancares, and has been involved in the production of Ternera Gallega Suprema beef since 1994. The farming families that make up A Carqueixa maintain a traditional and extensive farming practice, and the cooperative owns a significant amount of both agricultural and forest land.

A Carqueixa aims to revitalize Os Ancares, an area of great natural and scenic value located in the eastern part of the province of Lugo, in the mountains and valleys shared by Galicia, León, and Asturias. To achieve this, the cooperative sustainably manages resources and has worked for decades on preserving the unique character of Os Ancares—culturally, humanly, and environmentally. The cooperative’s management is 100% environmentally friendly. The cattle help maintain clean meadows and forests, reducing the risk of fires and preserving the landscape value.

SELGA is a private company founded in 2002 by the Forest Association of Galicia (AFG) with the primary goal of providing specialized services demanded by its members.

Among its main services are:

  • Forest management for private and community-owned lands, as well as the supervision and direction of forestry work.
  • The development of forest management plans, land mapping, and forest cartography.
  • Forest certification through SELGA Xestión Forestal Sostible, which prepares and manages the process of obtaining forest management certification under the two international systems: PEFC and FSC. The total area covered is approximately 38,000 hectares, with more than 7,800 managers.
  • The restoration and recovery of forests and natural forest ecosystems.
  • The execution of forestry tasks: planting, afforestation of agricultural lands, pest and disease control treatments, and carrying out pruning and thinning.
  • Wood marketing: sales management and auction organization.
  • The development of renewable energy projects.

Almacenes Boina is a company founded in 1993, located in the north of Extremadura, in Galisteo (Cáceres), specialized in the agricultural sector. It offers a wide range of services to its clients, including the buying and selling of cereals, sales of plant protection products, fertilizers, tools and agricultural implements, cereal drying, machinery services for fertilization, and wholesale food product sales.

Since 1993, the company, with its technical team, has been dedicated to providing advice to clients aimed at improving the quality and production of their crops. This guidance also covers the various legislative changes implemented in recent decades that affect the agricultural sector, such as digitalization and fertilization plans.

Collaborating members

The USC will participate in the project through the Silvopastoral Systems Group, one of the eight research groups within the Department of Plant Production and Engineering Projects. This group is part of the “Agroecology and Agroforestry Systems Research” Programme, coordinated by researcher María Rosa Mosquera Losada, and includes personnel from social sciences (Faculty of Geography), plant production (Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering), and Artificial Intelligence (Faculty of Physics).

The main objective of the Silvopastoral Systems Research Group is to promote rural development through the management and transfer of knowledge to improve rural competitiveness and the provision and quality of products and services under sustainable productive, environmental, and social conditions. The group has over 30 years of experience in the research of agricultural, forestry, and agroforestry systems, focusing on productivity (nutrition, livestock production, bioeconomy), environment (adaptation and mitigation of climate change, soil carbon sequestration, life cycle assessment, greenhouse gas emissions), nutrient recycling (circular economy), biodiversity (native breeds and flora and soil biodiversity), and social aspects.
